N’Dambi @ Black Cat, Jazz Christmas @ Kennedy Center

N'Dambi @ Black Cat
N'Dambi @ Black Cat   Kennedy Center Jazz Christmas   N'Dambi @ Black Cat

Two shows I shot on assignment. My first time at the Kennedy Center after almost ten years in the DC area… I felt under-dressed. The Kennedy Center show was my first time using my new 70-200 lens. Not the best shooting situation, I could have really used a 300mm… maybe next Christmas.

Aloe Blacc @ RNR Hotel

Aloe Blacc @ RNR Hotel
Aloe Blacc @ RNR Hotel    Aloe Blacc @ RNR Hotel

I went into this show knowing literally NOTHING about Aloe Blacc. I left a fan… really good performer, really catchy fun songs done in a motown style. I normally am not a big fan of ‘retro’ musical styles, but there was something about this show that just worked for me. A really good time.

Howard Yardfest w/ Wale, Doug E Fresh, Trina Da Baddest Bitch…

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Lola Monroe @ Howard YardFest
Howard YardFest    Chopper @ Howard YardFest
Wale @ Howard YardFest
Doug E Fresh @ Howard YardFest    Howard YardFest
Mr Vegas @ Howard YardFest

This was a lot of fun. Wale, Doug E Fresh, Trina, Choppa, Mr Vegas, the beautiful Lola Monroe, Black Cobain, and about a million more artists performed. I had to file twice from the event, which was a wild experience fraught with bad wifi connections and dying laptop batteries, but I did it. At one point a mini stampede of people literally jumped over me, on girl kicking my laptop (where I was filing photos), but I made it through and on deadline! I won’t be able to review the show better than Chris Richards, so check out the two stories from the Washington Post:

Wham City Comedy Tour first night!

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Wham City Comedy Tour.
Wham City Comedy Tour.    Wham City Comedy Tour.
Wham City Comedy Tour.
Wham City Comedy Tour.    Wham City Comedy Tour.

Me and Michael Byrne went to the opening night of the Wham City Comedy Tour, a DIY night of comedy, skits, music, video and performance art by the Wham City Collective (and friends). Wham City is a (mostly) Baltimore-based group of artists in all media, including Dan Deacon, Ed Schrader, Dina Kelberman, Connor Kizer, Adam Endres, and many more.

Since it was the first night (and, as I found out later, the first time the whole program was performed in it’s entirety), there were a few timing issues and a few off beats, but all in all it was really entertaining… the various pieces that were performed managed to change moods, from absurd slapstick, to bleak dark comedy, to wry intellectual wit. For every gag that fell flat, there were several that hit hard and I don’t think anyone there could say they didn’t laugh out loud many times. The first leg of the tour is done, but they are going out on another soon! Check them out!

November Assignment Round-up: Kristofferson, Shinedown, Maita.

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Kris Kristofferson.

Kris Kristofferson at the Music Center at Strathmore. This was a fun little show, also one of the rare ones where I was probably the youngest person there… the room at Strathmore has great acoustics and it was really cool to see Kristofferson live. He is pretty damn old but was still a strong performer and had plenty of anecdotes about all the songs. It was also cool to see him perform stripped down, just him, no backing band.

Shinedown @ Warner Theater.

I had honestly never even heard of Shinedown before I shot their show at Warner Theater in DC, they are apparently sort of a arena-style rock band. This was an “acoustic” performance of their material, which apparently is alot heavier normally than this was. They told earnest stories about the writing of each song, and the crowd seemed to love it.

Luisa Maita @ Bohemian Caverns.

Luisa Maita at the Bohemian Caverns. I love the Bohemian Caverns and am glad I finally got a chance to shoot there! If you’ve never been and you live in DC, find the time to go. Great, intimate venue, and a historical landmark to boot. Luisa Maita’s music isn’t what I’d normally listen too but it was a good performance, she has a great voice and a really good way with the crowd, especially at an intimate venue like this.

Roger Waters, the Wall

Last month, I got a chance to shoot Roger Water’ the Wall tour for the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun. It was quite a spectacle… probably the most complex stage show I’ve ever shot. It was really challenging, with drastic changes in lighting, pyrotechnics, props, animatronics… pretty wild show.

Guided By Voices.

This show was great! Over two hours (short for a GBV set, but let’s face it, none of us are as young as we used to be) and packed with classic songs. If you are an old fan of the band, don’t miss them on this tour. See the whole GBV set here, and read Phil Runco’s review of the GBV show, along with my photos, up at Brightest Young Things.

Urbanite review of Under The Strobe Light (my book).

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Al Shipley over at Urbanite just did a nice little write-up about my book. The thing basically sold out the first run, only a couple left, but I am about to do a second run, with some expansions and some changed design elements, so feel free to purchase one – but if you want the new & improved version, it won’t be out for a bit yet! If you don’t mind the OG edition, go ahead!

the Vaselines @ 9:30 Club

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

the Vaselines @ 930 Club

Last weekend Michael Byrne and I covered the Vaselines US tour kickoff at the 9:30 Club in DC. Pretty fun show, I had never seen them before, and honestly didn’t know much about them besides that they were Kurt Cobain’s muse… well, pleasant suprise, an engaging poppy band with really foul mouthed (but in an adorable way) stage banter.

NOLA in DC pt II: Trombone Shorty @ 9:30, the Meters Experience @ Blues Alley

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

trombone shorty @ 9:30 clubtrombone shorty @ 9:30 clubthe meters experience @ blues alleytrombone shorty @ 9:30 club

A week or so I ago was lucky enough to cover two New Orleans artists for the Washington Post – I asked my editor if he gave me the assignments because I’m from Louisiana, but no, total coincidence! The first was Trombone Shorty at 9:30 Club, who I wasn’t particularly familiar with before going in, but I figured it was going to be fun since he started the set with “As the Saints Go Marching In”… it was a pretty energetic show, Trombone Shorty has an almost unbelievable amount of energy and he got the crowd worked up to a level I haven’t seen in a long time at the 9:30.

Leo Nocentelli’s The Meters Experience (at Blues Alley) was alot more relaxed, focused more on a chiller mood that fit in with the dark atmosphere at Blues Alley, a dinner club I had never attended before. Actually, before going there, I had spent years wondering if the dinner clubs you see in old movies, where a big band plays to people dining even still existed… it does! This show was a lot less intense then the one at the 9:30, but it was chock full of stories and anecdotes about the early days of the Meters and how they came up with their songs, and so forth. Pretty interesting stuff.

Paramore & Tegan and Sara @ Merriweather.

A couple of weeks ago, I shot Paramore & Tegan and Sara for the Baltimore Sun. You can see the gallery here on the Sun site.

I am not a huge Paramore fan, but man… they were totally in control of their crowd. Especially Hayley Williams, the lead singer – she had the whole arena in the palm of her hand. As big as Paramore are now, I would be really suprised if she/they wasn’t a much bigger star in a few years…

Tegan and Sara are a band I used to like a bit, but hadn’t listen to them in a few years… they had a much calmer, but also more friendly and affable relationship with the crowd, and their set was way more pro/rock and less indie/intimate than I would have expected. Good set though.

Smashing Pumpkins, Kill Hannah, Bad City @ Rams Head

smashing pumpkins @ rams head.   smashing pumpkins crowd @ rams head.   smashing pumpkins @ rams head.

A few weeks ago, I covered Smashing Pumpkins for the Baltimore Sun. You can read the review here and also view all the photos here.

The photos of the Pumpkins aren’t that great because the band wanted everyone to shoot from VERY far back (which is not normal), so I had to do the best I could. Ah well. It was a weird show, basically half diehard Smashing Pumpkins fans who love even their recent material, and half people there for a nostalgia fix. The two sides didn’t mesh well and Corgan seemed annoyed by requests to play hits that were 17 years old. Ah well. The new stuff, for the record, still sounds pretty good even though I don’t know the songs.

of montreal.   of montreal.   of montreal.

Last week, I shot Of Montreal and James Husband’s tour kick off in Baltimore. It was a fun show, though I was SO SICK. I apologize to anyone I spoke to at that show, I was totally delirious with fever and probably made no sense. This was one of the most grueling photo editing sessions ever, since I had to file the photos by 9am. Somehow I managed it between fever dreams and dry heaves.
