Sinden Soundsystem @ Sonar, Baltimore.

sinden.
rye rye.     ears, sinden sound system.
mz bratt & ears, sinden sound system.     scottie b.

Last week I checked out Sinden (from London, creator of that “Hit me on my Beeper Beeper Beeper Beeper” song) at Sonar. I was expecting a DJ set but he amped it up – there were THREE MCs, all British, along with him, and special appearances from Rye Rye (they did “Hardcore Girls”) and Blaqstarr. It was a pretty great time. Dave Nada and Scottie B also performed, a pretty full night.

THEN, after the show I realized that the Homosexuals, who I had seen play at SXSW earlier this year had played next door, and I had missed them. :( But Bruno, the singer, ran into me and either remembered me from talking to him at that show, or mistook me for someone else and we chatted and he even gave me a rare record:

bruno from the homosexuals & emily rabbit.

A good night! Check here for the whole Sinden set.

Fool’s Gold Tour @ Ottobar, Baltimore

trackademics.

The other week I worked the Fool’s Gold/Scion/Taxlo show at the Ottobar (with Jokers of the Scene, Trackademics, Nick Catchdubs, Sammy Banannas)… met several of the people at Fool’s Gold, who were all really nice and awesome, and checked out the various artists. It was a good time. I felt like the crowd was sort of confused when Trackademics started, as if they didn’t expect some live hip hop at this show, but what can you do? DMBQ & Monotonix @ the Ottobar.

Monotonix @ the Ottobar    DMBQ @ the Ottobar
DMBQ @ the Ottobar    DMBQ @ the Ottobar
DMBQ @ the Ottobar    Monotonix @ the Ottobar

Two of the most wildly audience interacting live bands around played at the Ottobar monday… it was a great, great time. DMBQ are still one of the best bands I have EVER seen… Monotonix was fun and a spectacle (even taking the show outside before Ottobar staff chased everyone back in), but musically I don’t think they quite compare. Still, it was one of the funniest shows I have been to in a long while… View the full set here.

Virgin Fest Afterparty @ Sonar…

dave nada : virgin fest afterparty @ sonar

dave nada : virgin fest afterparty @ sonar    virgin fest afterparty @ sonar    Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) : virgin fest afterparty @ sonar

Last weekend was the Virgin Fest, and after that was the inevitable afterparty at Sonar… it was a pretty good time, Dave Nada killed it of course… watch out for this guy, he is about to be huge. Which is awesome because he is the most crucially best dude ever… Celebrity DJs Vito from the Rapture and Kele from Bloc Party were also spinning, as were Emily Rabbit and Will Eastman. Check the whole set here.

My Crew Be Unruly.

K-Swift

Tittsworth & Blaqstarr    DJ Sega, Mz Streams, Blaqstarr

A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of shooting and attending the 15th Anniversary Party for Unruly Records, My Crew Be Unruly at Paradox in Baltimore. Scottie B, K-Swift (one of her last performances), Diplo, Blaqstarr, DJ Class, Stretch Armstrong, DJ Sega, Say Whut, Dave Nada, Tittsworth, Mz Streamz, and many more DJs and MCs were there to make it a ridiculously amazing party… Check out the set here.

Whartscape 2008!

Whartscape : Dan Deacon

Whartscape : Blue Leader    Whartscape : Ed Schrader

Whartscape : Ultimate Reality    Whartscape : the Oxes

Whartscape : Future Islands

Whartscape.    Whartscape.

Last weekend was Whartscape in Baltimore. It’s a music and arts festival held by the collective arts group WHAM CITY every year in Baltimore… it kicked off an insane weekend that also included Artscape, the Unruly Records 15th year anniversary, and some other events too. For me, the Whartscape highlights were Future Islands, which I can only describe as an avant dance band with Meatloaf as singer, Celebration, Dan Deacon, an illegal lecture by Mark Hosler from Negativland, and the Oxes reunion. fire on north avenue.

fire on north ave.

fire on north ave.     fire on north ave.

Friday morning, at around 3am we were leaving Ben and Kim’s… Brian called me to tell me there was a raging fire on North and Charles. Brad and I drove up and saw a bunch of trannies and what might have been their pimps running from huge clouds of smoke. We parked, walked over to North to get closer… it seemed like it was raining, but it was just sprinkles from the firehoses… the pressure in those things must be intense. Once we got on north we could see at least 10 firetrucks… a huge building next to a church was on fire, and many, many firefighters were working to contain the blaze… pretty crazy stuff.
